The neighbourhood you choose shapes your entire Positano experience. Here's our honest take on each area โ and the specific hotel we'd book in it.
Centro Storico (Clifftop)
The upper part of Positano โ the white and terracotta buildings stacked up the cliff, the church dome, the bougainvillea โ is what every photograph of Positano shows. Hotels in the clifftop centre are the most expensive and the most atmospheric. The stairs down to the beach (and back up) are the price of this location.
โ Stay here if
Couples, honeymoon travelers, anyone for whom the view and atmosphere of Positano is the main reason for being here.
โ Skip if
Travelers with mobility issues โ the cliffside location requires significant stair-climbing. Budget travelers โ the clifftop hotels command a substantial premium for the view.
Le Sirenuse
$600โ$1,200/night
The most famous hotel in Positano and one of the most famous in Italy. Owned by the Sersale family since 1951, the hotel has maintained its character through decades of luxury tourism โ the terrace, the pool, the view of the Amalfi Coast are exactly what the photographs show, and better in person. Book at least 4 months ahead for July and August.
Pro tip: The Champagne bar on the upper terrace opens at sunset โ bookable for non-guests for drinks. If you're staying elsewhere, this is worth an evening visit for the view.

Spiaggia Grande (Beach Level)
The small main beach of Positano and the restaurants and hotels immediately around it. This is the most accessible part of town โ boat docks, beach restaurants, the most active social scene โ and the hotels here are slightly more affordable than the clifftop options, with direct beach or near-beach access.
โ Stay here if
Travelers who want beach access, couples who want the Positano atmosphere without the extreme cliffside pricing, anyone arriving by ferry who doesn't want to carry luggage up hundreds of stairs.
โ Skip if
Light sleepers โ the beach area is the loudest part of Positano, with boats and music until late in summer.
Hotel Savoia
$130โ$190/night
The most honest value hotel in Positano โ family-run, consistently well-reviewed, and located without requiring a long stair descent to the beach. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the terrace has sea views, and the price is as low as hotels get in a town where budget hotels are uncommon.
Pro tip: Book the sea-view rooms โ the price difference from standard rooms is minimal and the view entirely changes the experience of the hotel.

Hotel Pupetto
$200โ$320/night
The best mid-range hotel in Positano with direct beach access โ a rare feature at this price point. The pool terrace looks directly onto the sea, the restaurant serves good Campanian seafood, and the hotel has its own section of beach. Our consistent top mid-range recommendation for anyone wanting the full Positano experience without the Le Sirenuse price tag.
Pro tip: Request a room with a balcony facing the sea. The hotel has both cliff-facing and sea-facing rooms โ the price difference is worth it for the view.

What to Know Before Booking a Hotel in Positano
Positano has essentially one season โ May through October. The town almost completely closes from November through March. Book for JuneโSeptember at least 3โ4 months ahead; August requires 5โ6 months for any hotel with sea views.
Positano has no flat streets. Every hotel involves stairs โ sometimes hundreds of them. Check your hotel's stair count and whether they offer a porter or taxi service from the road before booking, especially for longer stays.
The ferry from Positano to Amalfi, Salerno, Naples, and Capri is the correct transport. Don't rent a car for Positano โ parking is expensive, the road is stressful, and the ferry is faster and cheaper for every destination worth reaching.
Positano is the most expensive town on the Amalfi Coast. Budget $200+ for a mid-range hotel room and $40โ60/person for a sit-down dinner with wine. Everything here commands a view premium โ factor this into your total trip budget.
