How We Chose These Hotels
Every hotel on this page was chosen using the same criteria: consistent guest reviews across multiple platforms (minimum 7.5/10 average on Expedia.com, 200+ reviews), free cancellation availability, location within or adjacent to the neighbourhood described, and value relative to comparable options nearby.
We don't list every hotel in Florence โ we list the ones we'd recommend to a friend. If a hotel doesn't meet our threshold, it doesn't appear here regardless of commission rates. Read our full review criteria โ

The neighbourhood you choose shapes your entire Florence experience. Here's our honest take on each area โ and the specific hotel we'd book in it.
Santa Croce
Our preferred base in Florence. You're walking distance from the Uffizi, the Duomo, and the Ponte Vecchio, but the streets have a genuine neighbourhood feel that the more tourist-dense Duomo area lacks. Better restaurants, local bars, and slightly lower hotel prices.
โ Stay here if
Couples, food lovers, return visitors, anyone who wants central without the tourist scrum.

Travelers on a very tight budget โ this is still a central Florence neighbourhood and priced accordingly.
Soprarno Suites
$170โ$260/night
Technically in the Oltrarno but worth the slight location stretch. Six suites in a 16th-century palazzo, each individually designed with antiques and contemporary art. The host recommendations for restaurants are better than any guidebook.
Pro tip: The apartment-style suites with kitchenettes are worth the extra cost for stays of 3+ nights.

Santa Maria Novella
The area around Florence's main train station. Convenient for arrivals, slightly cheaper than the Duomo area, and still walkable to all the major sights. Not the most atmospheric neighbourhood, but an honest choice for budget travelers.
โ Stay here if
Budget travelers, people arriving by train, anyone on a short trip who just needs a clean, well-located base.

Atmosphere-seekers โ this is a transitional neighbourhood, not a destination in itself.
Hotel Perseo
$95โ$145/night
The best value hotel we've found in central Florence. Family-run, consistently well-reviewed, and honest about what it is โ a clean, comfortable, perfectly located budget hotel. The breakfast is a proper Italian affair, not a sad buffet.
Pro tip: Book directly with the hotel if possible โ they sometimes offer lower rates than the platforms for direct bookings.

Oltrarno
South of the Arno, the Oltrarno is the Florence that locals actually live in. Artisan workshops, neighbourhood restaurants, the Pitti Palace, and the Boboli Gardens. A 10-minute walk across the Ponte Vecchio to the Uffizi.
โ Stay here if
Return visitors, couples, anyone who wants a more authentic Florence experience and doesn't mind the walk to the main sights.

Portrait Firenze
$550โ$950/night
The Lungarno Collection's flagship property. Arno-facing suites in a converted palazzo, service that anticipates rather than reacts, and a level of quiet luxury that's genuinely rare in a city centre. The terrace restaurant at sunset is worth booking regardless of whether you're staying.
Pro tip: Request an Arno-view suite โ the sunrise from your private terrace is the best alarm clock in Florence.

What to Know Before Booking a Hotel in Florence
Easter week and the Pitti Uomo fashion weeks (January and June) drive significant price spikes. Book 8+ weeks ahead if your dates overlap.
August in Florence is brutally hot (35ยฐC+). If you're visiting in summer, prioritise hotels with air conditioning โ not all Florentine palazzos have it.
Free cancellation is essential in Florence โ the city has multiple annual events that cause sudden room shortages. Lock in a cancellable rate early.
Walk the distances on a map before booking. 'Central Florence' hotels vary from 5-min to 20-min walks to the Uffizi โ that difference matters.
