The neighbourhood you choose shapes your entire Amalfi experience. Here's our honest take on each area โ and the specific hotel we'd book in it.
Centro (near the Duomo)
Amalfi is smaller than it looks on a map โ the entire town is walkable in 15 minutes. Hotels in the centro, within walking distance of the Duomo di Sant'Andrea, are the most convenient for the ferry dock (day trips to Positano and Capri), the restaurants, and the shops. This is the correct base for most visitors to Amalfi.
โ Stay here if
First-time visitors, anyone using Amalfi as a base for day trips, travelers who want to walk to everything without taking taxis.
โ Skip if
Travelers who want complete quiet โ the centro is the most active part of town and the main corso carries tourist traffic all day. Stay in Atrani (5 minutes away on foot) for the peaceful alternative.
L'Antico Convitto
$100โ$160/night
Steps from the Duomo, honest pricing, clean rooms, and a staff that knows the town well โ the best budget option in central Amalfi. No pool, no terrace restaurant, no luxury โ but the location is perfect for the price and the rooms are consistently well-reviewed.
Pro tip: Ask the front desk for their restaurant recommendations rather than using TripAdvisor โ the staff know which kitchens are currently worth visiting and which have declined.

Hotel Luna Convento
$180โ$280/night
A 13th-century Franciscan convent converted to a hotel โ the Byzantine cloister (built in 1222) is one of the most remarkable architectural spaces on the Amalfi Coast. The cliffside pool has a direct sea view, the rooms in the converted convent have original architectural details, and the location above the town gives access without the noise. Our top mid-range recommendation in Amalfi.
Pro tip: The Torre Saracena restaurant in the converted watchtower is worth booking for dinner โ the view from the tower at sunset is extraordinary and the kitchen is the best in the hotel.

Hotel Santa Caterina
$350โ$650/night
The most complete luxury hotel on the Amalfi Coast โ built into the cliff just west of Amalfi town, with a private elevator descending to a saltwater pool and sunbathing platforms at sea level. The rooms are spacious and sea-facing, the kitchen is the best in the area, and the terraced gardens with lemon and orange trees are extraordinary. Nothing else on the coast competes at this level.
Pro tip: Book the hotel's private water taxi from Amalfi harbour โ the arrival by sea with the cliff and gardens above you is one of the great hotel arrival experiences in Italy.

Atrani (5 min walk from Amalfi)
The smallest municipality in Italy, squeezed between two cliff faces immediately east of Amalfi โ and the most local, least tourist-facing village on the coast. Atrani has one piazza, one beach, a handful of restaurants, and accommodation prices 30โ40% lower than Amalfi for equivalent quality. It is a 5-minute walk through a tunnel from Amalfi's main square.
โ Stay here if
Return visitors, travelers who want a genuine coastal village experience, anyone who finds Amalfi too busy and wants the same access at lower prices and with real neighbours.
โ Skip if
First-time visitors who want to be immediately in the centre of activity โ Atrani is calmer and less connected than staying in Amalfi proper.
Hotel Fontana
$80โ$130/night
The best-value accommodation on the entire Amalfi Coast, in a village that day-trippers don't visit. The rooms are simple, the terrace faces the sea, and the piazza below has a bar serving the best espresso in the area. The 5-minute walk to Amalfi means you lose nothing by staying here and save significantly on accommodation.
Pro tip: Request a room facing the cathedral side if you want the classic Amalfi atmosphere, but pack earplugs during summer โ staying directly on Piazza Duomo means you can photograph Amalfiโs cathedral before the ferry crowds arrive each morning.

What to Know Before Booking a Hotel in Amalfi
Amalfi is busiest from June through September โ the town is genuinely crowded with day-trippers from 10am to 5pm. Stay overnight to experience the town after the crowds leave, when the restaurants and piazza feel completely different.
The ferry from Amalfi is the correct transport for day trips โ Positano (25 min), Capri (45 min from Salerno), and Naples (90 min) are all reachable without driving the coastal road. Buy ferry tickets at the dock the morning of.
Amalfi is a working town, not just a tourist destination โ the paper mills, fishing boats, and local market operate alongside the tourism. Book a Tuesday morning when the local market runs for the most authentic version of the town.
The hotels in Atrani (5 minutes on foot from Amalfi) offer 30โ40% lower prices for equivalent quality and a genuinely local village experience. Consider staying there and using Amalfi as your day base.
